I really don't know but how is the oil level in the dash pots. maybe too little and they are raising too fast.

Did you check your oil level at the pump and leave the oil filler cap off or loose?

If it was straight after a fill, then air leak=hose off
if you have used to old fuel in the carbs say a mile from fill up then bad fuel

Just a thought, assuming the petrol cap is a vented type (I'm not sure) maybe worth removing the petrol cap and try starting and giving it a few revs to make sure the cap isn't causing a vacuum.

what are the chances of the fuel being contaminated?

More likely that there is an air leak or a breather pipe has split allowing for an overly weak mixture.

remove carb elbows, are both carb pistons lifting off the bridge when the engine is idling and do they both rise when you rev.

cheapo carb diaphragms are made from tissue paper. I use them only from Burlen now

E5/E10 Advance your ignition timing a couple of degs, should help.

Possible the fill-up stirred some crud in the tank which is blocking something.

First, check the flow out of the filter, just to make sure it is not the pump getting stuck somehow.

Then, worth trying the car on one carb at a time (by disconnecting the throttle link to one carb at a time. The "lean" carb, if that is the problem, will not drive the car or require more choke. Then it is a case of dismantling the problem carb and unblocking the needle valve.

Also worth checking for stuck carb piston if none of the above.

I would agree that it is unlikely to be the fuel!

SORTED !!!! Noticed petrol coming out of the overflow pipe, rang julian who suggested I put the inertia switch on and drain the petrol and blow down the line....which I did. For good measures I used a highly sophisticated tool, namely a hammer and gave the carbs a smack.
                    All working ok now.
                    Thanks lads for your input.
p.s Got a malpassi, checked pressure it was a tiddly over 1 1/2 psi bought it down to exactly 1 1/2.

I run my malpassi at 2psi

It has been a fight, but you seem to have some tenacity / determination

Well done! Could be the float on one carb got stuck down. A hammer is good for fixing a range of highly technical issues! If it happens again you will know what to do.
