That's what I thought, but it's quoted on page 06-1 of the ROM.

24-32 lbs/ft. Use a fibre washer under a plain washer and 24 lbs/ft is plenty. Copper washer will only deform if it is softened by annealing first.

Oh I know, just stating that after 50 years, aluminum can and will give up - just like the picture of mine showed. Just be cognizant of that while you are attempting to get to the specified torque.

Solved! It was carburetters and inlet manifold.

I sprayed the throttle spindle seals with oil which altered the tickover of the engine, I sprayed the manifold hold-down nut which altered the tickover of the engine. Of came the carbs, I installed new throttle spindle seals, new gaskets throughout, new diaphragms. Also found a bit of plastic swarf in one of the Grose ball valves which stopped it working properly. Placing the carburetters on the manifold gave me concern because the whole assembly wobbled - it shouldn't do that. Taking it off again, placing a straightedge across the mating surfaces, I saw that there was a thin penny washer on the stud which I hadn't noticed before. It was glued on - something like superglue - this is a manifold I recently bought and hadn't used before. Once I removed that the carburetters seated themselves nicely and don't leak now. The throttle response is almost what I'd expect, I just need to do the usual carb balancing and tuning, but the road test today was superb!

Thanks again for all your helpful suggestions!

Just a can of spray oil - it’s just to test for leaks, so oil seals up any little air holes.
