click when you go to position 3 on the ignition switch is most likely an after market starter relay.

Sounds like you might need the attention of a local tame auto electrician to iron out some of these faults

Feeling your pain Steve…. At a distance.

just a feeling, but is the ignition switch causing this?

its possible to remove disassemble and clean the contacts

Hi Julian, that’s something I haven’t checked I will give it a try over the weekend. Many thanks Steve.

Hi all, good news found problem on ignition not turning engine over, it was the the block connector just behind starter motor it was covered in oil and muck. I gave it a good clean and away it went. Ignition light still on without key even in the ignition. I have replaced alternator with a new one from Classic Spares part number A127 type 55 amp thinking that mine had given up because I have a squeal coming from front of engine, I took power steering belt off still squealing.New belt on alternator so I am unsure what’s making the noise, could it be viscous coupling I’m wandering. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The fan do look like it’s got a wobble on or maybe they all do. Cheers Steve

If you “flick” the fan blades if it rotates more than a few inches the viscous may be suspect but in my experience it clunks more than squeals.

Thanks Goldstar I suppose I could take alternator belt off and see if it stops. Steve

I had an alternator where the metal fan was not being secured properly by the pulley nut. It would occasionally howl. took me a while to work it out. belts off is a good start.

Grip the viscous fan and try to rock it on the centre bolt. if you can feel any play then it is dead. replace asap, when the bearing lets go it will cause you to briefly think the engine has thrown the big ends

Hi Richard, been playing around with it today, I replaced alternator with new belt not thinking it was that, but put old one back on and noise disappeared, can’t remember where I got it from but is it just a case of crap parts again?. Many thanks Steve.

It could be the new, unworn, belt was riding on a different, and possibly rusty/rough area of the crank pulley.
