    Another here..

Dad was a toolmaker originally, but later was a development engineer. Most of his specialty tools went to the apprentice, as was tradition, but he saved some for me. 2-3 micrometers up to 6”, vernier callipers, ba spanners, etc etc. I have used them all, especially on my engine rebuilds. He passed over 40 years ago and I still use his drawing instruments from his 1929 apprenticeship and even have loads of his pencils.. precious stuff!

I have an EE badge on my shed.

Some of the tools I had from dad / grandad have left my custody.

Miss them all…. But hope they are all okay.

4lb hammer with a long handle is especially missed.

              English Electric made important stuff….

The only example left going still is the Deltic / class 55.

              2 x 36 piston 2 stroke diesels.

reading about sir Stanley hooker at the moment…

              ’not much of an engineer’

              fabulous book and memoirs.

he said ‘the pen is mightier than the spanner’ … takes us back to the topic…. Undecided about that phrase though.

i met sir frank whittle in my teens, at a 2/1/2 hour lecture in sherbourne school. no idea at the time, that he was such a so so marvellous chap.

so wish I’d got his autograph and kept it.

I've not had a problem but has any one tried one of these, you could save a £110.00 to spend on crap parts

I’m amazed just how much comment a ‘distributor spanner’ can generate!
Possible candidate for a new Technical section? :-)

When on campus at Cranfield University I sometimes stop by the Whitle Building to admire the W2/700 gas turbine engine on display. It is one of the earliest versions and therefore a predecessor of almost every gas turbine in the world today, it initially powered the Gloster Meteor. This picture was taken at Cranfield ten years ago when the engine was presented with an Engineering Heritage Award by the the Institution of Mechanical Engineers

                        Love it!

if you’re able to read the Stanley hooker book.

some bits show just how engineering brilliance was just given away.

My father had this home made tool in his tool box. He worked for British Airways on their engines. The socket size is 7/16. My father past away in 2020 and I have been debating ever since whether to bend it a bit more so it will fit the Stag's distributor. Today I did bend it. At least now it wont be sitting at the bottom of my tool box anymore.
