Hi Terry, I bought a new thermostat last year and found that the Stag started to overheat, upon testing ( dropped in boiling water ) it did not open.I put the old one back in.Its a 75 Degree one.

P.s, you will find that opinions vary on the Degree type you should fit.........

The rating of the thermostat doesn't makea great deal ofdifference to the running temperature. It only affects how quickly the engine warms up, as most Stag engines will run at about 85-90 degrees.

It was once recommended to run with 88 in the winter and 82 in the summer. Too much hassle. 82 degrees should be fine all year round.

Sounds like you have a duff one. Let Peter know and he will replace it. Better to check the next one before fitting.

Bad luck that Terry - you should be able to trust new parts to be good, instead of having to mess about. Such is life!!

          keep smiling!!

            Hi Terry

Good job you did this rad change by the sounds of it! Did you also drian the block and if so how much muck came of there?:?

It is always wise to test a thermostat before fitting lesson I learnt a long time ago.

How is the water leak has this cured the problem?

Hi Stuart, yes drained the block as well and flushed with a hose. Quite a lot of gooey sandy stuff came out. I've not taken the car out to test for the leak yet, I've just let it idle. I need to order a new stat and gasket. Keeping my fingers crossed but I expect it will need topping up at first to get any remaining air out. Does any one know if the bleed hole in the stat should be in any particular position? Terry

                Terry,

You should fit the thermostat with the bleed hole at the top. It lets all the air escape whilst it is in the closed position. If it is not fitted with the hole at the top you will get trapped air.

Thanks Roger, there was something in my distant memory banks about the hole position but I couldn't remember. Thanks again for the info. Terry
