If you're any good you'll have the engine in and running by Whiskey O'Clock. Unless we intend to spend the evening taking things back off which seems the norm for Stag restoration!

Well the engine was back in by Whisky O Clock. If the wiring hadn't been removed with a chain saw we might have got it running! What happened to all the outdoor photos that show the metal flake??

Metal flake really doesn't really show up in the photos - very subtle... doesn't really suit you at all!

Barry may have missed your question. It's a Toyota Supra 5 speed box.

                  Hi MD,

It is a Toyota W55 gearbox from a Supra. I already have a Toyota and Nissan power train conversion in my TR6 and it is awesome so could see no reason why I shouldn't have one in the Stag. Puts rubber down to the road instantly, no tyre squeal on corners and much more stable in the wet.

Couldn't find anyone who made a conversion kit so I made my own. Sourced the flywheel and sandwich plate from Ebay UK and had it shipped out. Found a Triumph 2500 and a toyota bellhousing and a company cut and welded them to a set of dimensions and it fitted like a glove. Clutch centre plate is toyota and pressure plate is HD stag. Slave cylinder is toyota and a bracket was welded to the bellhousing. The release bearing mechanism is toyota.

Had a new and uprated propshaft built. Picked it up today and it fitted beautifully. I then have been working out the revised lengths for the rear halfshafts and hope to have them extended tomorrow by a local drives shaft specialist.

The new gearbox mounting has just been finished and that uses the standard cross member with some modifications to suit the toyota rubber mounting.IMG_1806_1_1.JPGIMG_1807_2.JPG

The diff is a Nissan R200 longnose LSD and a new mounting bracket was made for its installation. You wouldn't think it was from a different car as the mounting is the same as the original triumph. The halfshafts and diff were found on the local auction website here and I picked them up for a song. someone had already had the idea of installing them in a triumph and had the nissan halfshafts modified to fit the triumph hubs. he obviously gave up on the diff mounting and halfshaft length issues. but that's Ok cos we have the technology out here.

For a little town ravaged by earthquakes and sitting on the other and of planet earth it is totally amazing what can be done. I remember the trouble I had in England looking for an engine builder with a 6 cylinder line boring machine for doing the cam journals. Everyone seems to have one of those here!

                  Cheers

                    Looks a stunning colour.
Only thing I mights suggest at this early stage, as the same thing had occurred on my respray, the battery box and corresponding panel on the other side are visible if somebody cares to peer though the front grill, never mind water access.
As I had mine back before I noticed such, I ended up hand painting them with some of the leftover paint then spraying the lacquer, if you wanted to do this, now would be a good time.

Why didn't you use the toyota V8 engine as well, looks good.

It was my plan to do a 4.0l Toyota V8 conversion and I have seen the Lexus Stag that resides on the North island and it is a truly stunning conversion (although it still has the auto box). Getting that engine to run with a manual gearbox requires a computer genius and although the engine itself is cheap as chips you will pay 1000's of dollars for link computors etc. Here are a couple of pictures of the Lexus conversion. I believe this was a checkbook conversion and Andrew wouldn't say what it cost.

The Stag is such a talking point and everywhere I go I get questioned about the TV8 engine so I kind of felt duty bound to keep it for as long as possible.

I have now invested in the edelbrock carburettor, sports exhaust, Jaguar cams and Toyota gearbox so too late to change to the Toyota lump now. However, when the time comes I will replace the TV8 with a 4.6l Range Rover engine. At least all the mountings, bell housings and manual gearboxes are easily available and functional. Only trouble is that Rover engines sound boring so I will then see about designing a similar set of unbalanced exhaust manifolds to retain the doppler effect on the exhaust note.

                        Cheers

Yes I am giving the inside face of the front grill and battery panel a coat of satin black. I also read a that good idea is to seal the gap between the rad and the body frame as there is a fair bit of air by passing the rad.

I would also like to say thanks to the forum for being able to find a cure to my starting problem. Seems the car's brain is still in automatic mode with the gearbox in gear! So fitting a manual box requires a bit of fiddling around. The two red and white wires in the bellhousing connector block were the culprits. Once the two wires were joined the engine turned over just fine. Yee Ha! I hear people have preferred suicide to taking out a defective starter motor.

The electric water pump is also installed and tested. I have no idea what the hoses supplied by EJ Ward were supposed to do apart from provide me with a near death experience. The hoses are useless as the pump flanges are 35mm and the Stag ones 32 mm. So the supplied pipe was suited to the pump but too loose for the stag fittings. Adaptors were provided with the pump kit but they wouldn't fit either. After finishing the job last night I woke up to a puddle of anti freeze on the floor under the lower rad outlet. I went to the local auto supplier and bought some 33mm hose and went home to change them over. So there I lay on the floor with my trusty bucket beside me ready to drain the system. I slackened the jubilee clip, pulled the pipe off and gave my self a full blown anti freeze face and bodywash. The bucket collected less than a litre. At least I've now thought of a prezzie for the wife next Christmas.

                          Happy New Year folks.

                            Barry,

Your ECU issue reminded me of a problem that I was asked to find a solution to a few years back with a Cummins engine going straight in to derate mode as soon as a gear was selected but perfectly happy in Neutral. To cut a very long story short and eliminating Red Herrings that the Alison Transmission was the culprit. I proved it was the engine ECU which was not transmitting a signal from a specific pin on it's output plug telling the G/box what was going on, so the G/box didn't acknowledge it.

I ordered, programmed and duly replaced said ECU at great cost to the company only to find that nothing had changed

What had I done wrong? well when you change one of these you use the Cummins diagnostics (which I am a licensed user) to make an image of the software from the original and transfer that to the new ECU which comes as a blank template. It wasn't until I took another image from an identical vehicle in the fleet that had no issues and installed it that it proved to be that the original fault was actually corrupted software and not failure of the electronic unit.

Don't you just love modern vehicles and all the electronic wizardry that they have to tease and perplex you.

                            HNY,

                            Ian.

Those red & white wires from the auto inhibitor switch make a great anti theft switch.

The previous owner was definitely paranoid about losing the car. It had two secret under dash cut out switches plus the alarm system which also demobilized circuitry to the coil. It was a nightmare tracing all the wires so I could eliminate them. The drivers footwell looks like my sons WRX STi which has suffered a similar fate. Now the car runs I'll have to set them all up again. The car will really be worth nicking now!
