    Exhaust modifications

There's a fair bit of discussion on going about alternative engine choices and regardless of the powerplant used the loss of the Stag sound really does take away the originality of the car. Not everybody is going to look under the bonnet of your Stag but everyone likes the sound of the Stag exhaust. My question is, has anyone redesigned their alternative engine manifolds to have the uneven pipe lengths as per the Stag set up. I know the overhead cam will produce a different sound to a push rod but the doppler effect from one downpipe at the front and the other at the back of the engine is what really makes the Stag stand out above all the other V8's.

I can't see carburation making a big difference to exhaust note. Given two engines in similar tune with say Weber v. Stommies would they sound different??? Not sure about OHV v. OHC. Pretty hard to prove that one though! But firing order and crankshaft arrangement (flat plane etc) would IMHO make a difference. Why do Subarus sound so distinctive - flat four motor. Certainly a combo of gas flowed heads, ss exhaust manifolds and system has radically changed my Stag's exhaust note. It sounds far more like an American V8 with a certain harshness with you hoof it like high compression Yank V8s.

I chickened out and bought the Rimmer sports exhaust. Could have had one made locally but the cost was extortionate plus there would have been a massive time and cost element towards R&D.

The Edelbrock carburetor makes a difference in the overall sound due to air sucking into the manifolds. But that is attributed to the mesh air cleaner instead of the standard paper air filter.

The Rimmer exhaust system has made the sound less deep than the standard unit but still distinctively stag. I believe if you keep the cast iron manifolds and just use the rimmer sports exhaust you can retain the deeper note.

          Cheers

Hi Barry, In one of your replies you said you used Jaguar cams. Which model and what mods to make them fit? Thanks.

I dont think the lengths of the primary pipes on an exhaust make much difference to the sound. Most of the exhaust, including the stag, have a balance pipe or an X-pipe so the exhaust pulses do balance to a certain degree. The small difference in lengths of the pipes is insignificant as the gasses flow at about 350ft per second and the exhaust pulses at around the speed of sound.

However, the efficiency and scavenging is effected. The sound will change if the the bore of the pipe or flow is changed.

The sound of the Stag is the firing order, angle of V (90) and crank angle. V8's do sound very similar. I think you would be hard pushed to tell the difference of Stags with TV8 and RV8 with identical exhaust and inlet system.

I changed my manifolds from a a standard make do to a 1 5/8" high flow manifold. The exhaust note was far deeper.

Hi, I had a spare set of Stag cams ground to the Jaguar 3.8s profile. The jaguar profile has more overlap to create more gas flow in and out of the cylinders. I haven't driven the car yet so I am waiting to see the difference in performance.

                Cheers

I agree generally but I think the Stag exhaust note is very distinctive and easily recognised. Again it would be hard to prove as RV8s typically use a slightly larger bore exhaust than TV8s. There is definitely something different and very nice about the exhaust note from a standard Stag system. Just for interest check out the NZ Stag Owners website. If you move your mouse over any of the menu items you get a lovely rendition of a Stag motor. Turn the sound up!!

The New Stag......and she has a name. Ladies and gentlemen behold "STAGZILLA"

After three months intensive effort building this car from a shell, Stagzilla is finished and today we successfully completed a 2000KM inaugural run to the 30th Anniversary of the New Zealand Stag Owners Club.

She raised some eyebrows that's for sure but the positive feedback from the club members and the general public has been immense. She turns heads everywhere and people come running with compliments on her quality of finish and individuality.

Needless to say I am very pleased with the way the car has turned out. Still things to do such as fit the front spax adjustable shocks and uprated anti roll bar. Plus there is all the little things left to be sorted such as rubber seals to windows and the tonneau. The hard top has just been painted and I will be fitting it out in the coming weeks. Once complete I will post pictures of the hard top installed on the car.

                    I hope you like it.

                    Cheers

                      Some more Stagzilla pics

Here are a couple more pics of the car by the sea in a South Island town called Kaikoura.

Stagzila certainly did stand out amongst quite a big crowd!

It being the North Island of course it did rain... frequently!

There were some interesting colour Stags on display.

Have to say that the dominant colour wasn't white - probably red but there were four french blue stags among the 30+ cars.
