My neighbour passed away recently and his Spit has lain untouched in the garage since. Took it for a spin 'around the block' and then washed and photographed it so that his widow can get a Probate valuation.
First time I've ever driven a small chassis Triumph. Makes you realise how modern the Stag was in comparison. The Spit in question is several years newer than my Stag, but feels ancient to drive. Being rather taller (and larger!) than average, I don't think I could use it regularly..........
My 2nd and 3rd brand new cars in 1970 and 1972 were a Mk3 then a Mk4 Spitfire.
Loved them both and only lost the 2nd Spitfire when someone ran into it whilst it was parked and it was declared a write off.
The Mk4 had the "Stag" rear end and overdrive button in the gear lever, and was an improvement on the Mk3, but it still only had a 1300cc engine, so I fitted a performance enhancement kit from BL Special Tuning that made it go a bit quicker. I was running the MK4 when I got married in 1974, and until it was hit in 1976, my wife and I went all over the Country in it, including your part of the woods David, touring round Devon and Cornwall one Easter.
Treated mine to an MOT today, too many mods for an exemption, and to be honest I 'm not entirely in favour of the exemption. Alright for some, but whilst I do all my own work I'm not a mechanic so I prefer a 'trained eye' to have a once over.
Only advisory was a slight oil leak from the gearbox which I knew about but it needs the engine out to sort, so that can wait till the back end.
I've just finished changing my "modern" reflective number plates to traditional silver/black plates. I think they are much more in keeping with the age of the vehicle and feel it was £30 well spent.
Fitted a new badge to Stagatha! It’s a Knights of the Road badge that dates back to the 50’s and 60’s and they were sponsored/presented by the News of the World, the notorious Sunday paper that has now disappeared. My father was awarded one in the early 60’s for “rescuing” a stranded motoring family and transporting them to the south coast in the wee early hours to catch their ferry or cruise ship - I think! It was a long, long time ago.
His badge and certificate etc. disappeared many years ago, (the badge went rusty and was scrapped) and I have been looking for one for a number of years. Finally got one, and a lapel badge, so I thought it would look good on the Stag.
What do you think?

Sold the Stag today.........happy and sad, just need to find a worthy replacement. Anyone got a TR6 or TR4A they don't want - either nice or for restoration ?
Went to Hebden Bridge Classic Car Show on Sat & Sun. What a show, 30+ Stags there on Saturday fewer on Sunday including 8 or so from Notts/Derby. Strong contingent from Yorks. Well worth going and have booked for next year www.hebdenbridge-vintageweekend.org.uk

We actually drove through Hebden Bridge at tea-time yesterday. We'd followed an old MG over the moors from Colne but didn't actually see any other cars. However we got a lot of admiring glances and comments from all the drinkers sat outside the various pubs enjoying the evening sunshine. We're booked into Burley In Wharfedale classic show on Sunday August 19th so lets hope for similar weather.
Mary and I went to see mum and dad down in Ottery St Mary last week. We left Norfolk at 04.30 am and reached Leigh Delamere service station at 08.15 what a run. We then had about another 70 miles it took 3 hours so much for the M5. I must say the run home a week later was very easy and fast. Aubrey
Its along time since anyone posted on this thread!
On Saturday I made a new set of bootboards for our Stag. The old MDF ones had became warped after getting wet during a holiday in Scotland a few years ago. I used 9mm plywood for the new ones so they are nice and sturdy. Since I took these photos I have applied two coats of exterior grade varnish to help them resist absorbing any damp. I cut the nearside corner out to allow me to store spare oil and water down the side of the spare wheel. The carpet covers the bottles up.
I am confident they will last considerably longer than the MDF versions which soak up any damp.
