I recon mine to be good at 45 psi idle and 60 psi above Eg 2000 rpm Graham

Oops ! Hot idle on mine can be as low as 15 psi - It's on the 'to-do' list, however I'm happy that, provided I don't thrash the bo****ks off it then it'll be ok for some time to come.

        Cheers

        Julian.

That's Ok J, mine is 20 psi hot idle. Mr Triumph was quite happy to let it go below 5 psi before the worry light came on

Mine is just under 50psi at speed and hot idle is around 20-25 psi. Had new mains and big end shells fitted earlier this year when I was doing my head gaskets.

              Thanks Ian,

I 've not been too worried about it but it's reassuring to hear that a professional like you is equally happy about it.

Cheers, and a Happy New Year to you.

Just to add to that, IIRC the Rover V8 runs at 30 psi at higher rev's

Perfectly OK at that Julian. Graham must have a HP pump fitted. The jury is still out as to whether pressure that high is good or bad. There have been plenty of discussions about it in the past.

Yep, we used to get occasional reports of oil light coming on (ie 5ish psi as Ian says) during the warranty period

                    Cheers

Yep V8s just lllluuuuurrrrvvvve FLOW not pressure. Rover V8s run at about 30lbs pressure at revs over 2000 and the warning low pressure sensor comes on at 5 lbs. My race engine had gated sump with swinging gates and big wings and increased pressure sensing warning at 15 lbs and I could still make it blink on high speed instantaneous right turn corners.
Stag runs at 25lbs on hot idle and 40 lbs at revs over 2000.

I prefer ignorance. The Grey Lady has an oil pressure gauge and runs at 25lbs psi when hot at 45 mph . When it developed a problem in 2002, I drove back from Brittany to Paris with just about 12 lbs psi. When I contacted Red Triangle the person at the other end of the telephone simply stated 'you've got oil pressure!'.
My Stag has a gauge and the previous owner removed this relying instead on the warning light. I drive and enjoy the rumble of the V8 without thinking anymore of the matter. After all one does have to keep an eye on the temperature and find those oil leaks. Is that not enough?

Ignorance is one thing Robin but ignoring low oil pressure is another. In real terms it's the difference between trashing a crankshaft or being able to reuse it if the issue is addressed early or paying for another (£500 ish ) if you leave it, on top of what is required to rebuild the engine. Dash gauges are not reliable and a calibrated gauge will give you a true reading but low oil pressure is not to be ignored

                          Ian.

The standard I've worked to all my motoring life is,"40 psi at 40 mph in top gear". My Stag runs 45psi.
                            Cheers Ian A

Ian - are the SOC saying the oil pressure warning light is of no use? Surely not. Once started the oil light goes out and never comes on (and neither does the ignition light) until the engine is switched off. I accept you point about trashing a crankshaft and I certainly don't have a spare £500 to spend. But what is the point of of the warning light otherwise?
